Henry W. Grady, and other intellects of his time, foresaw an agricultural society based around the growth of several crops. Proponents of the New South first turned to secondary crops that could thrive in southern soil. Tobacco was the second most vital crop after cotton to the pre-war South. Several factors led to a resurgence in tobacco production following the Civil War.
As the Union troops came south during the war, they were introduced to this tobacco, which opened up a new export market for southern tobacco production. This boom was due in large part to an agriculturalist named Seaman A. He moved to Louisiana and used the demonstration method of agriculture education to show farmers how to select the most appropriate crops for their soil and how to care for those crops. His educational exhibitions led way to the development of a network of local and regional extension offices that supported agriculture education and production.
However, Southerners were not willing to turn their backs on King Cotton completely, and that proved to be a wise move. With the textile industry beginning to boom and industrialization in full force, the number of cotton mills in the south increased from to after the Civil War.
Partly as a cause of this boom and partly as a result, cotton consumption increased frombales to 1, per year in the late nineteenth century. Cotton and other crops benefited from the ever-growing rail service. Additionally, the advent of refrigerated rail cars allowed other southern produce to reach northern markets, which further diversified the southern economy. Field crops were not the only industry to take advantage of improved transportation.
The area around Birmingham, Alabama became known for its iron, limestone, and coal production. Coal was especially important as an energy source for the trains that transported it. Between andsouthern coal production increased by 44 million tons per year, from 5 million to 49 million tons. Another important energy source revitalized the South. Hydroelectricity, or electricity generated by water, was a growing force in the southeast region of the United States.
This power source provided another important step in the industrialization process.
The South also offered Southern Pine trees, which were in demand for their soft, multi-use lumber—which was used in great quantities to restore homes damaged during the war. Lumber camps grew exponentially in the south afterand tree cutting rose to new heights. But just how new was the New South? And what were the goals of this ideology? Instead of building a society that had at its foundation slavery and agriculture.
The New South ideology was an important force behind ending Presidential Reconstruction Radical Reconstruction had already ended by this point and bringing about the Compromise ofwhich gave the presidency to Republican Rutherford B. Hayes in exchange for removal of United States troops from the South. This effectively ended any legal protections African Americans had received after being emancipated. According to Grady, the New South would promote the same racial hierarchies that existed before the Civil War.
Grady and other New South advocates were generally against Reconstruction, protesting what they viewed as Northern encroachment and exploitation by carpetbaggers.

Source: Library of Congress. Socially, racial violence flourished. Lynchings and other forms of racial violence were routinized into the fabric of southern life, as was Jim Crow segregation. As historians have made clear, the Southern economy prior to the Civil War was the foundation of capitalism as it existed in the rest of the country and the world. Rather than being set in traditional, agrarian ways, under this interpretation, Southern plantation owners were capitalists in much the same way as Northern industrialists see The Half has Never Been Told by Edward Baptist and The Vast Southern Empire by Matthew Karp.

My adult son and I decided to go on a rather last minute trip to Iceland. An internet search led me, amongst others, to Nordic Visitor and was reassured to see they had achieved a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in 2014 which was an incentive to feel confident in the quality of the trip and ultimately was the Company I chose to go with.
I booked a four day, three night Northern Lights, Super Jeep Safari for myself and my son which we took in early February. We chose Quality over Comfort for our hotel and were not disappointed as Hotel Borg was just superb as well as being centrally situated and therefore everything was on our doorstep in downtown Reykjavik. She was super efficient as was always good in communicating via email so I always knew what was what. From the moment we arrived and got in the waiting taxi at the airport until the end of the holiday when we were collected at the Hotel Borg to be delivered back to the airport, the holiday was one to remember.
